8/8/12 Under the "HOT SUN"
The early toddlers were experimenting with the sun,our scientist went outside in their lab coats. In the first and second photo shows the sun hiding behind the cloud so we ask where is the sun? Amaya pointed and said "up there" then I said we can look up at the sky cause the sun is not shining on us. The third photo shows the sun shining on them Izayiah grabbed the side of his face and Christina yelled "ouch hot" then Jordyn said "Mrs. Rachel look the sun I see it".
We asked do the sun have a shape Yuwa said "yes" Jordyn said "a circle". This day we lasted only 20 minutes outside.
We even left a pail of cold water on side for a hour we had each child feel the water before putting it out and after that we brought it back inside for the children to feel that the cold water turned hot as it sat under the sun. I explained what we feel on our face and body when we are out on a sunny day is what the cold water felt by sitting under the sun. Although the water was warm they still wanted to splash their hands in the pail. The laughter and loud giggle told me they has a good time with this experiment.

7/20/12 wet sand
On Monday we had the children play in the sand table again but this time we let them experience the feel of the sand when it get wet. During activity held a bucket with the dry sand to allow them to feel the sand dry first, Jacob said "dry" as i said "remember when Ms.Tyonna had you put you feet in the sand how did it feel?" I got a small cup and poked a medium hole at the bottom. I had Johnathan scoop up some sand and then tilt the cup so our little scientist can see how the sand flows out the bottom. Then Christina, Jacob, and Dylan each poured a 4oz cup of water into the dry sand. Anabel started pointing at they sand and water mixing together. The children all eyes widen as more water was being poured into the sand and soaking up the water. Yuwa wanted to use the cup to scoop up the sand instead of her hands, while she held the cup with the sand in it I ask the children was the sand going through the hole? They said "no". I explained that the sand became too thick to go through the medium hole. The children began exploring the wet sand with their hands, they were squeezing it and letting it slide slowly between their little fingers and using the word "yuck" I even saw one of them taste it and said ummm but his face was sqinched up. I asked was that sand tasty he shook his head no. I had a great time watching them explore and discover the sight, feel and taste of the dry to wet sand experiment.

7/13/12 sand in my hand
Today during our activity center play a few children played in the sand table, they used rakes and scoopers to fill up the buckets. I begin to ask them where can we find sand? they looked at me so I knew I had to give them a visual outlook , so i show some photos of people at the beach. I said to them have mommy or daddy taken you to the beach? when you go to the beach you feel the sand on your feet and on your hands. Then Jordyn said "mommy went to beach, sand in my mouth" so I said did the said taste good she "it nasty" as she was describing her experience she was playing in the sand and shoveling it in the cup. then I said do see how it flows through your fingers and how it feels on your hand? Anabel said it "tickles" and then she laughed.

6/25/12 Some sink and some float
Today we conducted an experiment dealing with water I grabbed a few objects from within the classroom for a sink and float test. I first asked the children what object I was holding in my hand Jayden said “boat” and Dylan said “glasses” and Jordyn said “black crayon I said “Ok" we are going to use these objects in our experiment. Do you know what will happen when we put the object into the bucket of water”. We will see if it will stay at the top or go down to the bottom. Different children yelled out top, but Anabel said “down, down” while pointing her finger down toward the carpet. Anabel had a small lightweight ball in her hand, she threw it in the bucket and said ball and I asked where is the ball? Olivia said “water “with a smile on her face and Jayden said “top” pointing at the ball floating in the water. Then Johnathan threw the crayon in the water and clapped his hands as the crayon sink to the bottom. The children stared in amazement at the two objects in the water wondering why one was up and one was down. I said “ the crayon is heavier than the ball so it sinks at the bottom. So the Yuwa placed an object in the water. They place a few more objects until each child put an iitem in the bucket and saw their result. Then we counted how many was floating on top? 5 items and how may was sink to the bottom? 4 items.

6/1/12 Science Mystery Box.
Today I set out a mysterious box with some items and close the lid I wanted to see what they would do with them? and figure out how they would use them? Johnathan opened the box and yelled "look"then he took out the flashlight with a smile on his face he looked at the bottom of it and suck his hand out to give it to me I said "no" you show me what you can do with it and of course he pressed the button on the bottom and the light shinned. I said "yeah Jonathan you did it"! he did his happy dance and started going around the round putting the light on different objects. Racquel came in and ran to the box on the table and grabbed the mirror she started to stickout her tongue, but then she started licking the mirror as if it was a lollipop. I asked her how does it taste? and can you see yourself now that the mirror is all wet? the images became wierd due to the wetness on the mirror. As the children came in the each begin to open and take out a form of object to play with , Dylan and Olivia began to use the telephone cups and hold them to their ears and say hello to each other. Anabel and jordyn grabbed the ping pong balls and throw them up in the air and say up and down. Now that they have grasp the basic concept of the objects we can explore them in many ways and introduce new experiments.

5/30/12 Science is fun for everyone!!
Today was the big day to see how we are able to teach science to the children from our nine part training series with Vicki Cobb. I can say our children and parents enjoyed the experiments especially seeing their little ones wearing lab coats. we conducted many experiments with the mirrors and flashlights, super ears and phone cups, blow dryer and ping pong balls, The parents was so amazed at what their child was really learning. Christina dad said "no wonder she is always in the mirror" I said yes she sees herself and can see her body movements and how she controls her facial expression and seeing her eyes open and shut, her tongue stick out and goes in. I often watch her and she goes to the mirror and dances and stares at herself while laughing at the images she see. Then Nathan Mom says " Mrs. Rachel does he part take in the activity?" I said watch this Nathan what am I holding? he said "light"and picked up one of the hand held mirrors and pointed the flashlight he was holding in the mirror. She looked at me and said "ok" the smile on her face was that her son is capable of learning anything other then the basic ABC"s and 123"s. This was a great moment for me because I was able to show the our parents the experiments we chatted about briefly on how their children is learning science. They came out, saw the hard work and was impressed.
Thank You Vicki Cobb!

5/25/12 Is your hand Cool or Not Cool?
Today we tried the experiment with three buckets, one hot (warm), one cold(ice) and one room temperature I added an easy way for my early toddlers like adding red color to the one bowl and blue color to another the first question I asked them what is in the bowls? they yelled "water" then I asked is there anything different in the water? Jayden said Blue and Jordyn said red, so I said great job! now what color do you see in the third bowl at first they stared in the bowl and then Jayden said white. I was thinking clear water or no color because I did add any color but what he saw was the white sorrounding background of the bowl through the clear water. Then I let each child put their hands in the hot and cold water as Anabel place hers hands in the warm water she said hot and snatched her hand back and as her hand entered the ice cold water she said oohh" and ran from the table laughing, this was the reaction from all the children and which was great because they was being introduce to what their hands was feeling as they placed them in the water. once they put them into the third bowl they was relaxed and now splashing the water.I had a ball watching them laugh and carry on their own little toddler talk to each other of the hot and cold water.

5/22/12 Can other objects float besides a ball?

Can other objects float besides a ball during last weeks experiment. We had each of the children click on and off the blow dryer to experience the feeling on their hands and fingers when it turns on and listening for the sound, if it make a loud or soft sound. Johnathan eyes opened so wide as he click on the button and yelled ahh and let go of the handle and ran away with laughter. Jayden handed me a scarf and the children said " up" as the scarf stayed in the air, then Amaya gave me the red telephone and we place it on top of the dryer. I asked her will it go up? she smiled and I guided her hand to press the button and then she just smiled again showing all teeth.

5/15/12 Lets make a ball fly!

Today I introduced a new experiment to the children I held up a blow dryer and ask the children what is this? They look at me like you do not know what it is. Many of them touch their head and hair. Then Jordyn said “dryer” I said yes it ‘s a hair dryer it blows your hair like the wind outside. Dylan fixed his lips to blow in the air. I said “oh yeah you remembered that we faced the wind on our walk last week, the wind was blowing our hair, hats and the trees”. Then I took out the lightweight ball and immediately the children said “ball” in an exciting voice. Then I said lets make this ball fly, so I turned on the dryer they covered their ears, Christina ran to the other side of the classroom. Johnathan, Anabel, Londen and Olivia yelled with laughter. Amaya and Jayden was amazed and said “ahh” Racquel clapped her hands. I was happy to see all the excitement from them. I allowed each child to turn on the dryer and make the ball float up in the air.

5/14/12 Can you tell me what I really see?
I wanted to try something different today with the mirrors so I placed them out on the table some small handheld circle mirrors and 2 rectangle mirrors. I watched as the children walked to the table and picked up the mirrors of chose Nathan held the circle mirror close to his face and was looking at himself and turning his head from side to side as if he was saying NO, but he was moving in a slow motion. Then I thought Nathan was amazed at his image that was moving just like him and realizing that he can control and see his movement.
Anabel who was startled at what see saw the first time she looked in the mirror actually was making silly faces in the rectangular mirror and laughing at the same time. I guess to her it seem funny how her face was as she turn the mirror. I began to ask the questions that I was curious to know the answers to. I said Jordyn what do you see? She said “ Green Circle” I laughed caused that was not the answer I expected. I thought she was going to tell me her nose or eyes. The mirror was round and green so it wasn’t just about what Jordyn saw on the inside of mirror but what she saw on the outside as well. Our new student Londen took part by taking the circle mirror and she stared at her face then said “ mommy” and gave the mirror a kiss.

5/9/12 What's in the dark?
Today we conducted an experiment turning off the classroom lights and had the children use their flashlights to search for hidden objects in the dark, they looked high and low flashing the lights everywhere. Olivia found a toy pizza under the cots said Ms.Reeves "pizza" and Anabel found her coat pointing the lights in the cubbies and yelled "Ana" letting us know what she have discovered. Dylan lifted up the lid to the trash bin and said "elk" with his nose squinted up as if he smelled a dirty diaper in the trash bin. I said "Wow Dylan you found your dirty diaper that came from you? He smiled and said "elk" and close the lid, we laughed together as we continued our search. I heard a lot of oohs and aahhs during this experiment they will love to repeat this again and again.

5/8/12 Outdoor fun walkie talkie
I had the cups with strings from our last experiment and I had Jordyn hold the cup to her ear on the other end and she was listening to me as I asked her to touch her head, nose, eyes, mouth and ears. I asked Ms. Reeves to watch her to see if she really hear me. Jordyn laughed and said Ms. Rachel "I hear you"

5/3/12 Bang, bang bang, go Bonsai1
We had the children bang on many different items in the classroom like hitting the shelves and throwing, Johnathan banged on the changing table I asked him is the sound he's making is loud? he shocked his head yes and smiled., they then started hitting on the soft blocks. Dylan yelled loudly at the excitement going on in the room. they like banging and making lot of noises.

4/30/12 Shiny surfaces can you see yourself?
During our outdoor walk we did an experiment on how many thing can we see ourselves? The children spotted there body image in a black shiny car, Jordyn said "me" as she look at herself and Johnathan laughed as he looked in the rims of a jaguar car. I saw my face in the bottom of a beer can. The front window of the center was our last item we found the children spotted each other in the reflection they kicked up their feet and waved their hands back and forth.

4/27/12 Perk up your ears by Vicki Cobb
Today we tried our telephone experiment again, but this time I used a paper cup and a black yarn to see if there would be a difference. What did we discovered the sound was muffled by the thickness of the yarn, but we could hear the children talk but very low. But they still had a great time.

4/ 26/12 Perk up your ears by Vicki Cobb
Today, we had the class conduct the telephone experiment using the Styrofoam cups and dental floss. I just handed one end of the cup to a child and he immediately put it on his ear. I did not even tell him what I want him to do with the cup. After he put it to his ear I ask another teacher to help him hold it there to see if he could hear me talk on the other end. So I sang “twinkle, twinkle little star” I could see him smiling and his lips moving and singing along with me. The other children started to get their turns and enjoyed being able to talk and listen through a cup for a phone.

4/20/12 Having fun with science!
My children love playing in water they like the experiment of how adding a color changes the clear water. I also see them really exploring and enjoying the flashlights, they see the light go and off by them pressing the button to hear it click. Dylan goes into the cubby shelf and wave the light back and forth to follow the light with his eyes. I asked Olivia what do she see when we put the light on the mirror? She stared at the mirror pointing the light and just pointed at herself

3/21/12 "I face the wind"
we had introduce the children to the wind and had sat in and asked what is wind? then i took out my weather box and sprayed them with some water as rain then shined the flashlight on them as sun, next I took the piece of cardboard and fanned them with it I said " do you feel that? this is whats called wind. I also had them take a piece of tissue and blow it so they see what the wind does to an object. Dylan said " OH" as the tissue blew onto the floor. then each child started laughing at the way the tissue was moving they had a great time with this activity. Next we see what the wind is blowing outdoors.

3/5/12 "I See Myself"
Last week we wanted to see if we could see our self in at least five things during our outdoor walk. Yenzon and Anabel wanted to splash in a puddle but Tyonna showed them their image in the water. She asked them do you see something in the water Yenzon giggled of course they still splashed the puddle. Dylan like to pull on car doors so picked him up to let him see himself at first he stared, but then I said I see you in the window and waved so he waved back. We saw ourselves in the side mirror of a van, the store front door window and a school bus doors. Jayden yelled "me me eyes"others children was non responsive but we are doing that experiment again today.
2/28/12 Gravity
Bonsai 1 have been doing some of the gravity experiments and they loved it. Now when they get a ball they throw it up and say "down" as it bounces. The children have a lot of fun seeing themselves in the mirrors and other objects with the lights out and using flashlights. It fun to see their reaction as we witnessed each others during training. The water experiments, well they love water play so it was great to introduce new ways of playing with water and seeing these experiments the science way keeps me thinking of different ways to teach them.

2/17/12 Bonsai 1 with MirrorsToday we read the book "I see myself" and we handed out some mirrors to the children, this was very interesting to see because Anabel scream at the mirror and hit it once she saw herself. She gave it to Ms. Jones then she took the mirror and hid it on the bookshelf behind a book. I asked her what happen? lets see our eyes, nose and mouth, she said "no" then i said "how about your tongue lets stick it out", after a few minutes Anabel looked in the mirror and smiled. Ryan said "aha teeth" then laughed, I want them to get familiar with themselves in the mirrors before going forward.
2/17/12 "I Get Wet"
Yesterday I read the book and the children liked the picture, and they kept yelling water. Being that they were listening we got a cup of water and poured, dripped it into a bucket "yeah the water down" they really had fun as Mrs Jones splash the water on each child. we also gave each child a small cup of water and showed them to pour on the table to see the shape and then mess it up. They kept saying "water wet" they enjoyed it. Thanks Vicki!!

2/9/12 Flashlights in Bonsai 1
Today we had the toddlers use the flashlights in the dark. They were looking how they could see the lights on different item in the room. Anabel kept putting the light close to the wall and then moving back seeing how the circle on the wall went from small to large. Tyonna was instrumental in having them see their shadow and asking Jayden what do he see?he said a rainbow as he shined the light on the ceiling. I was amazed at what was happening in the room. We charted their responses to this experiment.
1/17/12 Little Explorers
I see how important it is to teach the children science. I like the fact that I can be able to introduce them to a new explorations and discoveries and many experiences that can enhance their mental, social, emotional and physical development.
Here are my five questions per Felice Harris requested from our workspace email .
1. What happens to a ball when it is dropped?
2. What happens when we mix different paints?
3. Can you feel the difference of the sand mixing with water?
4. How many boys and girls are here today?
5. What kind of winter clothes we wear to stay warm?
1/14/12 Toddler Science
Hello everyone as we know the little can be overwhelmed with some activities. This is going to take serious team work as they will soon be transition into other rooms. I am open to any science related ideas you have done with your older ones so I can introduce them slowly to my toddlers to prepare them for your rooms.

1/9/12 "I fall down"Bonsai 1 we read this book to the children and they were very interested in the pictures. I also took out a few objects to allow them to see the what happens when drop something.we asked questions what sound it make? Milk splash and spread. see the ball bounce when drop it. They took part in seeing what goes up must come down, the each had a beanbag and threw it up and watched it fall down .
1/9/12 Science feeds the mind
Science can be learned by the things we do and children do many thing that are science related. We as teachers have to keep our eyes open and observe and experience those moments with them. I can not wait to explore more, until next time.
