Ms. Ghada and I did more experiments using the concepts from the I Fall Down book. Before we started, we asked the students what is an experiment? London answered "we sit still, listen with our ears, and look with our eyes." We discussed the concepts of the experiment and asked the students questions about falling. We wanted the students to answer and then, through experimentation, compare their answers to their results. We gathered all the material needed.
We asked the students what happens when you trip or fall? What causes you to fall?
They answered, "There's something in the way."
We asked what happens when you spill milk or water?
Rony answered "You fall down!"
We threw two balls (of equal size) at the same time and I asked "Did the two balls fall at the same time?"
The students answered "Yes!"
We asked "What pulled down the balls?"
London answered "Gravity."
We tossed a block and a key and asked the students which way did the items fall.
Brandon answered "To the floor!"
We told our students what a great job they did. We enjoy doing a discussion before the experiments so that the students know what to expect. After re-reading I Fall Down, the students knew we would be dropping objects and they knew which way they would fall. The experiments reiterated the information they learned. We explained that gravity always pulls things down, down, down! We chant "down, down, down" when our objects fall.
The children loved the experiment. They loved having fun while learning what the force of gravity is and its effect on everything.
